Efficient Clearance for Barrels and Other Personal Shipments

Sending barrels to loved ones in Jamaica is a long-standing tradition. At Kingston Wharves, we make the process simple, secure, and efficient. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you clear your barrel or other personal shipments.

Here are the steps to clear a Barrel and Other Personal Shipments

Starting the Shipping Process from Overseas

The process of shipping a barrel begins when:

  • You engage an overseas shipping agent or freight forwarder to pick up the cargo from you and hire a shipping line to transport the cargo to Jamaica.
  • You should ask their overseas shipping agent/freight forwarder for the name and contact details of their local shipping agent before the items are shipped. This will ensure seamless communication in collecting documentation for clearance when the cargo arrives in Jamaica
  • The overseas agent will connect with a Jamaica-based agent who coordinates the local clearance process for when the cargo arrives at Kingston Wharves. ((Kingston Wharves provides warehousing services until the shipment is cleared)
  • The local agent will contact you to inform them that the shipment has arrived and schedule an appointment for you to pay and collect the documentation for clearance. (The agent must schedule an appointment with Kingston Wharves warehouse for you to do clearance)
  • Once you have been advised of the arrival of the shipment you have the option of choosing Kingston Wharves contactless cargo clearance process, Click N Collect where you pay online, we complete the process for you, and you attend the wharf only to pick up your cargo. Pick-up can be as fast as 15 minutes.

If you choose to clear the cargo yourself:

  • Proceed to the local agent to settle charges and collect your Bill of Lading
  • Pay Kingston Wharves charges online at eservices.kingstonwharves.com or in person at the location where your shipment is being stored. This is either:
  1. Total Logistics Facility (TLF), 195 Second Street, Newport West, or
  1. Kingport Warehouse Complex (KWC), 45–57 Second Street

These include:

  • Agent Fees
  • Handling and Lifting Fees are paid to Kingston Wharves.
  • Storage fee is payable to the Port Authority of Jamaica, if shipment is not collected 7 days, after arriving at the Port)
  • Customs duties are paid directly to Jamaica Customs.

To clear your barrel, bring:

  • Bill of Lading
  • Government-issued ID (Passport, Driver’s Licence, or National ID)
  • Tax Registration Number (TRN)
  • If clearing for someone else:
  • A letter of authorization, stamped and signed by a Justice of the Peace
  • Two forms of ID—yours and the consignee’s
  • If you received an unaccompanied baggage allowance (UBA) slip at the  airport:
  • Your passport with landing stamp
  • UBA slip
  • A Customs Officer of the Jamaica Customs Agency will examine or inspect your cargo in your presence, calculate your duties and issue a customs release
  • Upon receipt of the Customs Release, Kingston Wharves issues a gate pass that will allow you to leave the premises with your shipment.
  • When you have collected your gate pass, proceed to bring your vehicle onto the premises, proceeding toward the delivery dock to receive your shipment. Ensure that the vehicle you use is appropriate for safely transporting the cargo size you are picking up.
