Practical guidance to plan your shipment, avoid extra costs, and clear quickly

At Kingston Wharves Limited (KWL), we are committed to supporting Jamaicans returning home by making the shipping and cargo clearance process as smooth and stress-free as possible. As the Caribbean’s leading multi-purpose port terminal and logistics provider, KWL offers comprehensive services for inbound and outbound freight, including containerized, bulk, and break-bulk cargo.

Whether you’re relocating household goods, personal effects, or commercial items, this guide will help you understand the key steps, costs, and tips involved in shipping a container to Jamaica.

Before You Ship
  • Apply for your Returning Resident benefits via the Jamaica Customs Agency website before sending your shipment.
  • Delay shipment until close to your arrival date in Jamaica for smoother coordination.
  • Get the contact for your shipping agent’s Jamaican counterpart to resolve issues quickly.

  • If you anticipate delays, contact your agent or Kingston Wharves to make the most affordable arrangement.
  • To prevent demurrage, consider renting warehouse space to offload goods and return the container—storage is typically less expensive.

You may ask someone to clear the container on your behalf. Provide:

  • A certified letter from you granting permission
  • A copy of your valid official ID

You can also use a door-to-door delivery service through your freight forwarder.

  • Pay handling fees via the KW Mobile App (Google Play).
  • Use eservice.kingstonwharves.com or pay by bank transfer.
